Money to pay for the high cost of college is a concern for every student.  The rising cost of college means that many students can’t cover the full cost with grants, scholarships and savings.  Sometimes, student loans are the only way to make a college education a reality.

The federal government offers a number of student loan options to help students from a number of different situations qualify for financial aid.  All federal student loan programs use the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as a main application, which can be completed online or at your school.  The FAFSA is free of charge and will help determine what financial aid you will best qualify for.

One of the most recognizable federal student loans is a Federal Perkins Loan, which is a loan focused on providing student aid to students who demonstrate financial need.  Perkins loans have a ten-year repayment period with a fixed interest rate of 5%.  Students can borrow up to $5,500 a year with a lifetime maximum of $27,500 for undergraduate education.  Graduate students can borrow up to $8,000 annually and $60,000 altogether, including undergraduate loans.  The government grants borrowers a full nine-month grace period before repayment begins – regular payments must begin in the tenth month upon graduation, when falling below half-time status or with complete withdrawal.

Stafford Loans are another well-known student loan offered to assist with financial aid and are actually divided into two programs.  One is called the Federal Family Education Loan program (FFEL); the other is called the William D. Ford Direct Loan program.  Both programs have definite differences, as well as similarities, but the important basic fact is that both programs provide financial aid to students who are looking for ways to pay for college.

In fact, the FFEL loans are unusual because they represent a bond between private lenders and the federal government.  These private lenders, who receive subsidies from the government in exchange for the funds, offer FFEL loans.  Because of these subsidies, student borrowers benefit in the form of lower interest rates.

The other branch of the Stafford loan program is called the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program (abbreviated FLDP, FDSLP and Direct Loan Program.)  The lender in FLDP loans is the U.S. Department of Education.  This is the major difference between the FLDP and the FFEL programs.  Students qualify for these loans based specifically on financial need.

Besides being separated by lenders, Stafford loans are also differentiated into two different groups based on interest.  Subsidized Stafford loans are offered only to students who demonstrate financial need, and the government pays the interest on the loan while the student is enrolled in school, during the grace period and also during any authorized deferment.  Unsubsidized Stafford loans don’t share the interest with the government, and the student borrower remains responsible for all accrued interest.

Students who feel overwhelmed by the bill at the beginning of a traditional or accredited degree program semester don’t need to stress about relying on a shoestring budget to pay for school. Student loans are an accessible solution, when scholarships for college and grants for college just aren’t enough, and available in a variety of forms. With low interest and programs geared specifically towards those who have a true financial need, student loans are an affordable and functional solution to the cost of college.
