Schools on the Edge

'Rarely does a book on education reform capture both the big and the small picture with such brilliant clarity. MacBeath and his colleagues furnish a "no holds barred" account of the ins and outs of understanding and assessing the impact of schools struggling for success. A fascinating read' – Michael Fullan, Professor Emeritus, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. This book examines key issues in the field of school improvement. More specifically, it draws on evidence from the Schools Facing Exceptionally Challenging Circumstances project to explore: othe policy context of schools on the edge. othe nature of extreme challenges. othe way schools have responded to extreme challenge. owhat seems to be effective in helping such schools to meet the challenge. oobstacles to success and the facilities and resources to make a difference. ostrategies to meet the needs of the local community. Each of the authors has wide experience of school effectiveness and improvement, and of working with schools in disadvantaged communities in Britain, the USA and many other parts of the world.

Solutions to Your Online CE Questions - 1st Question (CE for Social Workers)

Several professionals have questions about the license renewal process, particularly in regards to the required continuing education. One of those many questions will be addressed in this article: "What are the continuing education requirements for my license?" This is a simple question, yet, the answer is important to know. How to find the answer to this question will be discussed in this article, using the field of Licensed Social Workers as the example.

Those that have been licensed for a long time will typically know the answer to this question. The requirements don't change much from renewal period to renewal period. However, what if there has been a change? Or, what if you are newly licensed and don't know what is required to renew your license? Finding the answer can be somewhat confusing at times, if you have no idea where to begin the process. As soon as you find out where to search, it is easy to stay on top of the latest changes.

Your starting point should be your state licensing board's official website. For instance, if you happen to reside in Oregon as a Licensed Social Worker, you will need to access the home page of the Oregon Board of Licensed Social Workers (residing at http://www.oregon.gov/BLSW/index.shtml). Everything is going online. This includes information from your State Board. The information found here is plentiful and useful. Your internet browser has a bookmar feature that would be wise to use with your licensing board's website.

After getting to the licensing board's home page, you should look for a link titled something to the effect of "Rules and Regulations". You can usually find the link listed among other links on either the right or left column of the page. When you click on the link you may be directed to the document itself or to a different page of information where you will need to find another link to get to the document of the board's rules. Oregon Social Workers will have to click on a link titled "Laws and Rules" and will be directed to a subpage before getting to the actual document.

Once you have found the "Rules and Regulations" document you will need to locate the section usually titled "Continuing Education Requirements" or just "Continuing Education". The title of this section for those in Oregon is "Continuing Education Reporting Requirements". You will find the precise answer to the question posed above in this section of the board's website. Even if you have renewed your license several times, stay up-to-date with your board's requirements by viewing this information before each license renewal. Protect yourself from damages that would occur from not following the updated rules put in place since your last renewal.

Excerpt: University of Bridgeport is an independent, non-sectarian university located on Long Island Sound in the South Bridgeport section of Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA. The school is the tenth-most racially diverse university in the country. The university had financial troubles in the 1990s and was the subject of controversy when the trustees were obligated to enter into serious negotiations with and subsequently gave control of the institution to the Professors World Peace Academy (PWPA), an affiliate of Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church in order to save it from closure. Since then, in an effort to boost enrollment numbers, the University of Bridgeport has attempted to recruit more international students. The University gained full accreditation in 2004 after periods on probationary status, first due to its financial difficulties and later because of the close connection between the board of trustees and the PWPA. The University of Bridgeport is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The University also is accredited by the Board of Governors of the Connecticut Department of Higher Education. National accreditations of professional programs have been granted by the following accrediting bodies in the areas noted: The University grew rapidly in the 1960s by capitalizing on the increased number of people seeking to attend a U.S. college resulting from the baby boom, Vietnam War veterans eligible for a higher education under the G.I. Bill, and international students who wanted to attend college in the United States. Enrollment peaked at 9100 students in 1969. Enrollment declined in the 1970s and 1980s after the waves of baby boom and Vietnam era veterans eligible for the G.I. Bill declined. By 1990, the University... More:
