CEUs for Social Workers- What Criteria Determines an Approved Provider of CE for My State License? (Question Two)
The question dealt with in the first article was, "What does my state require in continuing education for social workers?". Question #2 will be answered in this article, which is, "How does my state decide which CE providers can offer approved social work continuing education?". You can't begin your search for a provider until you have this information.
Once you have determined your personal CE requirements , the next step is identifying the criteria for the providers of CE. The various state boards may or may not approve any given provider. Becoming aware of your state board's requirements will be helpful in selecting a provider. Before getting into the details of this answer, let's evaluate the three main differences in pre-approval for CE providers.
The first option is to file for approval directly with the state board. This means that the CE provider will have a specific provider number issued by that state board. As an Example, for LCSWs in California, the provider you use must be approved by the CA BBS and have been issued a PCE#. For those whose state board has the same requirement as California, make sure the CE provider you use have been issued a provider number by your state board.
Another category are those state boards that accept providers who have received approval from a national board. To illustrate, those licensed in Connecticut as a social worker can use providers who have been approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC). Not all states accept the same national approvals, it may also depend on the profession.
The next category are those state boards that allow licensees to use providers approved by a different state board that governs the same profession. To illustrate, an LCSW who is licensed in Alabama is authorized to receive their CE from a provider approved by the Board of Behavioral Sciences in California (CA BBS), because the CA BBS has oversight over social workers. After going over these three categories, how do you find out what your state board accepts?
Start at the home page of the website for your state board. From the home page you will need to locate the link for the boards "Rules and Regulations" (or statutes, rules, etc.). After getting to the rules document you will need to find the section on continuing education within that document. The acceptable sources according to your state board will be explained here. For Oregon Social Workers, the section you are looking for is "Continuing Education Reporting Requirements". Here you will find if your state board accepts providers with approval from a national board, approval from another state board overseeing MFTs, or if they need to be approved by them directly.
Equipped with the knowledge from you research you can venture onto the task of finding a CE provider. There will be less headaches having done this work initially. If the approval information you are looking for is not readily available on the CE provider's website, ask them for it. If not there, move on. The next question to be answered will be, "How many hours of my CE can be earned online?", stay tuned.
