Information On Domain Name Registry
All domain names are registered in a database called the domain name registry. These domain names are changed into IP addresses by zone files that are generated by a registry operator which will keep the database of the domain names. These registry operators, or network information centers, are organizations that handle the registration from the names and control the policies.
Registries may, for example, have a policy to reject applications or cancel existing domain names if they detect obscene contents. They may also determine which companies or organizations will be allocated names based on biases of political, religious, cultural or any other such dimensions. But if not of these, the acceptance of applications is based on who submitted first. The cost of domain names may also vary depending on the registry.
Disagreements on domain names are resolved based on different methods depending on the policy enrolled in by the domain name registry. There are those which have their very own resolution method, those who follow homogenous policies among registries, while there are those which resolve such matters through civil courts.
The selling of domain names might be done directly by the name registry or through smaller commercial establishments. These may actually be made in wholesale -wherein an entire dot extension is of the client - or by retail. There are also different levels of domain systems that are sold. Second-level domains, for example, may sub-sell under their registry.
These can be seen in the dot extensions in the IP addresses wherein the prior to the final dot entry are several other dot partitions - example, although not existent would be future.st.int - the primary owner of the registry would be .int which allows sub-registration and thus the .st after the chosen domain name, future, from the client. Sub-registrations may go as far as four levels.
These domain names are administered with a system headed by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority which also assigns domain name authorities to specific website name registries. A domain name registry may be government departments, non-profit organizations or commercial institutions. Domain name servers then can market domain names through website name servers.
